Carmine

Carmine, a vivid red color used for centuries as a natural dye for textiles, in paint pigments, ink for illuminated manuscripts, cosmetics and medicinal purposes is made from the bodies of a parasitic insect called Cochineal.  These insects feed on the prickly pear cactus.
